構成主義とは、知識とは既成の固定したものではなく、個々人が自ら編成していくものと考える立場である。とりわけ、知識には、構成する主体の何らかの目的・価値観が前提になっていることを認める立場である。

　すなわち、知識は、知りたいと思い探すからこそ、目的に応じて事実から切り取られ、構成されるということである。それぞれの主体の知りたいという意欲によって、それぞれの主体が獲得する知識の中身は違ってくる。事実は一つだが、知識は人間によって多様に作り出されるということだ。したがって、知識について真偽を問うことはできても、誰の知識も完全ではないということになる。
